Osteoarthritis Prevention

At Physiomed Health, we assist OA management by reducing pain and enhancing function through targeted strength training to bolster muscles around affected joints.

Osteoarthritis Prevention

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive joint condition that develops when the protective cartilage within a joint gradually wears down, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It most commonly affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine, and while it is more common with age, osteoarthritis is not an inevitable part of ageing. With the right preventative strategies and early intervention, its onset can be delayed and its progression significantly slowed.

At Physiomed Health, our Osteoarthritis Prevention services focus on protecting joint health, maintaining mobility, and reducing risk factors before pain and limitation take hold. Whether you are at risk of developing OA or looking to manage early symptoms, our proactive approach is designed to support long-term joint function and quality of life.

Our Preventative Approach

Our Osteoarthritis Prevention program combines education, targeted exercise, and lifestyle guidance to help keep your joints healthy and resilient. Following a comprehensive assessment, our physiotherapists design a personalised plan that addresses your individual risk factors, movement patterns, and goals.

Key elements of our program include:

  • Targeted Strengthening
Building strength in the muscles surrounding the joints to improve stability, absorb shock, and reduce stress on joint cartilage.

  • Flexibility & Mobility Training
Exercises aimed at maintaining joint range of motion, reducing stiffness, and promoting smooth, efficient movement.

  • Weight Management Support
Guidance on maintaining a healthy body weight to reduce excess load on weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine.

  • Joint Protection Strategies
Education on movement habits, activity modification, and techniques that minimise joint strain and reduce long-term wear and tear.

  • Posture & Ergonomic Advice
Improving posture and body mechanics during daily activities, work, and exercise to reduce unnecessary joint stress.

Our physiotherapists take a preventative, individualised approach by considering factors such as age, activity level, occupation, previous injuries, and family history. This allows us to design programs that not only protect your joints today, but also support your mobility and independence well into the future.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote lifelong joint health through early intervention, education, and evidence-based physiotherapy care. We aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and strategies needed to protect their joints, stay active, and maintain independence at every stage of life.

Our Goal

Our goal is to reduce the risk and impact of osteoarthritis by improving joint strength, mobility, and movement efficiency. Through personalised prevention programs and ongoing support, we strive to help our clients remain active, pain-free, and confident in their movement for the long term.

Frequently asked questions

The aim of your initial visit is to establish what your problems are, how they got there and how to correct them. Once we have that information we sit down with you, discuss our findings and the treatment options available to you before any treatment is commenced.

Chiropractors are highly specialised professionals who have undergone an extensive lengthy university training program on how to deliver safe and effective care.

In terms of statistics, there is approximately a one in five million chance that spinal manipulation of the neck may be associated with damage (major or minor) to the blood supply of the brain.

The purpose of our physical examination is to assess your condition so that we choose the most appropriate technique for you. We believe that our expertise and experience enables us to provide the safest possible care. None of our chiropractors have ever had an incident and pride ourselves in patient safety.

An adjustment is not normally painful. In some cases, mild soreness to the area adjusted may follow. This is typically a normal part of the healing process where an area of the spine has been rersticted for a long period is now moving better.

Some adjusting methods can produce a popping sound when the gas and fluids in the joint shift. It’s much like opening a bottle of champagne or removing a suction cup. The sound isn’t a guide to the quality or need of the adjustment It is a common misconception that the noise is bones going back in place or rubbing on each other, this is definitely false!

There are many techniques that do not involve “manipulation” that we can use to correct neck problems. We will only include neck adjustments in your treatment if there is an objective clinical reason for doing so. We don’t include neck adjustments in your treatment if there are any indications that you would be at risk. Talk to us about your concerns.

No. We treat many patients who suffer from osteoporosis. Indeed, regular chiropractic care may help to protect patients from falls (and therefore osteoporotic fractures) by optimizing joint mobility, range of motion, balance and muscle tone. To correct spinal problems with patients suffering from osteoporosis we use specific low force techniques that allow for the brittleness and fragility of the bones

No. Some people can make their joints “pop,” but that’s not an adjustment! Cracking your spine is not the same as having your chiropractor assess your spine and specifically adjust selected joints. Worse, damage can occur by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are so specific even your chiropractor can’t adjust themself.

Whilst some patients experience almost instant relief nearly all patients are feeling improvement in one to two weeks. There are many factors that affect your rate of healing such as your age, the type of injury, your general health and how long you have had the problem. Every person is different and so rates of healing will differ.

During your visits you’ll be presented with information regarding the objectives of each phase of care and the optimum type and duration of care needed to achieve these results. Once you have this information it is your decision to choose the type of care you require. How long you go to a chiropractor is always your choice and depends entirely on your personal goals for your health.

Many pregnant mums receive chiropractic care. Mothers often find that chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy improve their back pain, help prepare them for childbirth and make delivery easier for themselves and their baby. Our adjusting methods are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age, and condition of health to provide the most suitable care.
